Looking for a particular mob or type of mob can be annoying. You know roughly where they are but as you run around looking for 13 Greater Hideandseekers, they hide behind that tree, or around the corner, or under a rock. Here’s my strategy for mob finding.

  1. Make sure you’re looking for the right mob. There’s nothing like killing 50 Lesser Hideandseekers when you need the Greater ones.
  2. If you don’t know where to find them based on the quest text, look them or the drop item you’re looking for up in WoWHead. This provides maps coordinates, and drop rates. Note that drop percentages for quest items will be low. (LightHeaded can also be helpful)
  3. Roam the area looking for the mob. If it’s hiding, a macro like the following one can be useful.
    /target Gargantuan Ooze
    /target Glutinous Ooze
    /target Muculent Ooze
    /target Primal Ooze

Bind it to a key and spam it as you roam the area. This particular macro is for hunting Oozes in Un’Goro. It says “set current target to Gargantuan Ooze, Glutinous Ooze, Muculent Ooze, or Primal Ooze.” Once you have a target, you at least know that you’re close. I wander the area at right angles till I either spot the mob or it stops being targeted. When it stops being targeted, I backtrack and continue moving at right angles.

Anyone have other suggestions for finding those elusive mobs?

(Inspired by Larisa’s Logos criteria and playing hide and seek with quest mobs.)

EDIT: Especially for Wrath of the Lich King, get one of these (cheap) and add
/use Shadow Crystal Focusing Lens
for a beam of light pointing straight at your target.
