Eros, Philia, Agape

Eros, Philia, Agape by Rachel Swirsky is a story that’s about as different from Isaac Asimov’s classic Robot stories as any story could be. At the same time, it has some striking thing in common with those stories. The biggest difference is that Eros, Philia, Agape is all about emotions and has the scientific parts of the story as backdrop. Robots in the Eros, Philia, Agape universe don’t have anything like Asimov’s Three Laws built in. At the same time, robots in both stories are not Pinocchio longing to be human. The exploration of what it means to have free robots living alongside free humans with neither dominating is key to the two stories.

I very much enjoyed this story and I hope to read more of the author’s work.

6 Brilliant UF Examples

One of the things I like best about WoW is playing with my User Interface. Sadly, I fear that my UI falls more into the cluttered than the elegant end of the scale. One of the key components of a good UI is a good set of Unit frames. This post, 6 Brilliant UF Examples | No Stock UI, helped me clean up my User Frames a bit. Now to get the rest of my UI looking good.

Turn Storage Containers Into Self Watering Tomato Planters

This looks like an interesting way to grow tomatoes: Turn Storage Containers Into Self Watering Tomato Planters. If I remember to pick up the parts before tomato growing season is over, I’ll give this a shot this summer.

Exit Strategy

I found this post on Exit Strategy from Mirror Shield – Yakra’s Reflections on Tanking very much worth thinking about. I think that’s one of the places I failed in raid leading pre-Wrath. We lingered in Kara far too long instead of making a solid push into Zul’Aman. As a non-progression guild, I would up the number of kills to something in the 5-8 range, but there should definitely be a time when the guild is DONE farming a particular boss. If you want to raid it on off nights, go for it but otherwise it’s time to move on.

6 Small Things You Can Do When You Lack Discipline

Zen Habits has a good post on 6 Small Things You Can Do When You Lack Discipline. I’ve found that the most effective for me is to make it easy. If I can find a simple step that I can do daily, I am far likelier to stick to a task.

Blood and Iron

blood I gave up on reading Elizabeth Bear’s Blood and Iron last night. What killed the book for me were the constant obscure references to events that happened outside the book.  It was like eavesdropping on a couple of old friends: “Of course I couldn’t because of what happened last Thursday”  “Oh yeah, and when you think about the stuff from Christmas, it’s not surprising that they did that.”  This is the first book in The Promethan Age series.

Blood and Iron is a contemporary urban fantasy that assumes a world of magic hiding in the shadows of our own world.  The Prometheus Club has been battling against Faerie by using technology to repel the Fae.    They are on the point of eradicating Faerie forever for their numerous crimes against humanity. The Faerie court’s hunter is involved with the current incarnation of Arthur and seeks to entangle this Arthur’s Merlin.  There’s also the hunter and the Arthur’s child who was abducted by (or surrendered to?) the Faerie queen.

The story is interesting but it seems deliberately convoluted.  I didn’t care enough about any of the characters to continue trying to unravel it.  I will not be reading any other books in this series.

Snap Circuits

Evan seems to be showing an interest in electronic projects lately. If he stays interested, I may look into getting him a Snap Circuits set. I’m not sure where you would buy these in Canada, but it looks like a lot of fun as a way of learning more about electronics. I remember being driven nuts by trying to get some of these types of things to work, but it was an amazing feeling when I finally got all my connections right and things lit up.

Back Up and Play Your Wii Games From an External Hard Drive

This looks cool: Lifehacker – Back Up and Play Your Wii Games From an External Hard Drive . I doubt I’ll be buying a Wii before winter returns, but I really like this idea. We’d bought a Gamecube but a bunch of the discs got really scratched up – hopefully this would avoid that problem.

Free Realms Item Codes

If you play Free Realms, Zam has some Free Item Codes! . There’s a lot of fun stuff in Free Realms.

Right now the thing I find the most frustrating is that I don’t seem to get better at the mini-games. It might be due to item upgrades, but in WoW I feel that I keep getting better – popping cooldowns at the right time, picking up more mobs, skirting that aggro-pulling line and so on. In Free Realms, I’ll pull off an amazing score, then I’ll have a bunch of low scoring games. It seems to be largely a matter of the right random numbers rather than improving my play.

iPod shuffle

I’m awfully tempted to see if I can squeeze next month’s budget to get myself an iPod shuffle. The big factors in my decision making are that iPods are the least crappy MP3 player I know of and the shuffle is fairly cheap. If I go for the second generation model it’s only a little more than the cheap plastic non-functional MP3 players I’ve seen. The shuffle aspect shouldn’t be that big of a deal as that’s how I generally listen to music. It may get annoying when I want to listen to a particular song or podcast. We’ll see what happens.

Looting the Guild Bank

thief When I canceled my WoW subscription, I deliberately left people with access to the guild bank and a message to help themselves.  Wouldn’t you know it, two non-contributing players decided to clean it out.  Not take a reasonable amount and ride off into the sunset, but drain the bank dry of others’ contributions over a period of a week or two.

REDACTED

In case you were wondering, it was a sting.  I was feeling nasty and paranoid and was curious to see how their ethics would hold up.

I did give everyone access to the full contents of guild bank. I did tell the guild to help themselves to the contents of the guild bank. The blame is mine. By the letter of the law, they have done nothing wrong.

Conscience for sale: 2400 gold

By their fruits ye shall know them (Matthew 7:16)

Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties – but right through every human heart – and through all human hearts.

Where do you find out about new books?

Jo Walton asks, Where do you find out about new books? I find that online reviews are helpful, but frustrating. Usually when I spot a book that looks interesting I can’t pick it up at the library. I’m not at a stage in life where I’m willing to pay to take a chance on an author – I want a solid free preview of their work before spending money on them. The Baen Webscriptions are great in that they let me pick up a book or two I’m almost positive I’ll like and I get some books I may like thrown in at no extra charge. Other than that, I wander the library shelves and pick out books at random.

Miniver Cheevy

Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn,
Grew lean while he assailed the seasons
He wept that he was ever born,
And he had reasons.

Miniver loved the days of old
When swords were bright and steeds were prancing;
The vision of a warrior bold
Would send him dancing.

Miniver sighed for what was not,
And dreamed, and rested from his labors;
He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot,
And Priam’s neighbors.

Miniver mourned the ripe renown
That made so many a name so fragrant;
He mourned Romance, now on the town,
And Art, a vagrant.

Miniver loved the Medici,
Albeit he had never seen one;
He would have sinned incessantly
Could he have been one.

Miniver cursed the commonplace
And eyed a khaki suit with loathing:
He missed the medieval grace
Of iron clothing.

Miniver scorned the gold he sought,
But sore annoyed was he without it;
Miniver thought, and thought, and thought,
And thought about it.

Miniver Cheevy, born too late,
Scratched his head and kept on thinking;
Miniver coughed, and called it fate,
And kept on drinking.
Edwin Arlington Robinson

I was thinking of this poem as a follow-up to yesterday’s post. What’s the value of working to fit in to your society as opposed to dreaming of what really appeals to you? Are you better dreaming of practical things?

Feeling Heroic

For the past few days I’ve had an urge to play WoW and I’ve been trying to figure out why.  I have no particular desire to raid, level an alt, do dailies, amass more gold, quest, or explore.

Turns out that I want to feel heroic.  The books I’ve been reading have heroes saving and reshaping the world while my days are spent making maps and moving dirt around.  WoW does the best job of making me feel like a hero.  Whether I’m waving two huge swords around, commanding a ferocious beast to destroy my enemies, or blasting lighting from my fingertips, WoW has that larger than life feeling to it.

For me, the next big game is probably going to be one that makes me feel even more heroic than WoW does.   If I don’t find something else that does that for me soon, I’ll probably go back to WoW sooner or later.

Digital Book 2009: A Recap

Smart Bitches, Trashy Books provides Digital Book 2009: A Recap.

My favorite quote was:
“The process of using an ebook should never get in the way of READING an ebook. Stop putting obstacles between me and my book.”

This really sums up what I want from ebooks.

Graduate From Legos To Dome Homes

Graduate From Legos To Dome Homes | GeekDad | Wired.com looks like a fun idea. I have to wonder how a house such as this one would stand up to Manitoba weather. There are a lot of interesting designs out there that work great in place where zero is viewed as bitter cold and a week of -40 weather would be the end of the world instead of a typical winter.

The Pirate and the Pagan

I read Virginia Henley’s The Pirate and the Pagan the other night.  If you thought Tess of the D’Urbervilles needed more sex scenes, more of Tess contributing to her own downfall, and a tacked-on happy ending, this is the book for you.  Otherwise avoid this book.

The first two pages are amusing, so you might want to read those.
